A man has been handed a 30-year prison sentence for the murder of his own daughter, accompanied by chilling text messages sent to his sons following the tragic incident.

Ryan al Najjar, aged 18, was discovered bound and gagged in a pond at a secluded country park, a month after her 18th birthday. Her father, Khaled al Najjar, ended her life, alleging that she was embracing a “too westernized” lifestyle with the influence of her brothers Muhanad, 25, and Muhamad, 24.

Ryan’s parents, Sumaia al Najjar and her father, had sought asylum in the Netherlands to escape the conflict-ridden Syria. However, eight years later, Ryan was brutally murdered due to her modernized way of life, which her father disapproved of.

The tragic discovery of Ryan’s body wrapped in 18 meters of duct tape in shallow water at the Oostvarrdersplassen nature reserve revealed traces of her father’s DNA under her fingernails and on the tape. Disturbingly, evidence suggested that she was still alive when thrown into the water, and in a disturbing message to his family, Khaled regretted not burying her.

In the court proceedings, it was revealed that the two brothers had driven Ryan to the isolated location, where she was left alone with their father. The judges concluded that the brothers were also responsible for her murder, with mobile phone data and algae on their shoes linking them to the crime scene.

Following the murder, Khaled fled back to Syria and is currently residing with another woman. Despite being tried in his absence, he was sentenced to 30 years in prison. Sumaia al Najjar expressed her strong desire for his extradition back to the Netherlands for justice. Ryan’s brothers, Muhanad and Muhamad, were convicted of aiding in the murder and received 20-year prison sentences.

Despite appearing well-integrated in the country, tensions arose within the family due to Ryan’s attire and behavior, according to her mother. Allegations surfaced that Khaled had used violent language from his wife’s phone to incriminate her, labeling Ryan in derogatory terms. The mother described Khaled as abusive, instilling fear in the entire family.

“He was a violent man. He used to break things and beat me and his children up, beat all of us. And then he used to refuse to accept that he was wrong and beat us up again… He beat us up a bit less since we settled in Joure but he still was violent. He has beaten Muhanad, his eldest, up many times and kicked him out of the house. Muhanad was terrified of him,” she recounted.

Ryan’s defiance, starting around the age of 15, stemmed from her desire to assimilate. She began to distance herself from traditional practices, which angered her father. One of Ryan’s sisters, Iman, described their father as tempestuous and unjust, creating a tense and fearful atmosphere at home.

Iman shared, “No one dared to question his request or tell him he was wrong. Tension and fear permeated the house because of him. He was very unfair and temperamental toward my siblings, and he beat and threatened me.” She also highlighted Ryan’s struggles at school due to wearing a hijab and the subsequent changes in her behavior.

This tragic case sheds light on the devastating consequences of family conflict and cultural clashes, leading to a horrific loss of life.
