Retail employees are currently grappling with a significant surge in shoplifting incidents this holiday season, as revealed by concerning research indicating over 800 offenses remaining unresolved each day.

During the 2024-25 period, a total of 295,589 cases of shoplifting were closed without identifying a suspect, representing an alarming daily average of 810 cases, setting a new record compared to previous years.

The analysis conducted by the Liberal Democrats highlights a substantial 65% increase from 2019-20, where 178,906 shoplifting offenses went unsolved.

Only 19% of shoplifting cases this year resulted in suspects being charged or summoned, with a notable 55% of cases concluding without identifying any suspects involved.

In response to the escalating issue, the Government has pledged to enhance neighborhood policing teams and revoke legislation that currently results in minimal prosecution for thefts under £200.

However, the Liberal Democrats are pushing for additional measures, advocating for an extensive implementation of CCTV systems. They propose that small independent stores should have access to grants and loans of up to £6,500 to install modern CCTV technology to combat shoplifting and enhance safety on high streets.

Josh Reynolds, the trade spokesperson for the Liberal Democrats and a former retail worker, emphasizes the urgent need for action as numerous staff members are apprehensive about working during the festive season.

Reynolds expressed concerns, stating that many shop employees are anxious about potential abuse or violence from thieves due to the high number of unresolved shoplifting cases. He emphasized the importance of protecting businesses and called for a widespread rollout of CCTV systems.

Sarah Olney, the party’s business spokeswoman, echoed these sentiments, labeling the escalating shoplifting crisis as a severe threat to local businesses, high streets, and the economy.

A Home Office representative condemned shoplifting as unacceptable and detrimental to high street businesses. They announced the Winter of Action initiative to address the issue, building on previous efforts that led to numerous arrests and fines for shop theft and anti-social behavior.

The government aims to strengthen police-community connections and increase police presence through the Neighbourhood Policing Guarantee, intending to deploy an additional 3,000 officers by the upcoming spring.
