Another Conservative figure, former Cabinet Minister Nadhim Zahawi, has switched allegiance to Reform UK, led by Nigel Farage. Zahawi, known for his prominent role in the Covid vaccine rollout, faced controversy when he failed to disclose his tax affairs investigation while serving as Chancellor, resulting in a substantial payment to HMRC. Additionally, his past includes expense claims for electricity bills on his stables and attending a controversial men-only event in 2018. Zahawi’s wealth and business connections make him an attractive asset for Reform UK in their fundraising efforts, yet his elitist background contrasts with the party’s anti-establishment image.
The move by Zahawi to join Reform UK drew criticism from the Conservative Party, with reports suggesting he sought a peerage before defecting, a claim he denies. Notably, Zahawi is the latest in a series of Boris Johnson loyalists to defect to Reform UK, indicating a lack of confidence in Johnson’s political future among some Tory members. In justifying his decision, Zahawi expressed concern about the state of the country, without acknowledging his previous support for Tory Prime Ministers.
While Zahawi positions Reform UK as a solution for the country’s ailments, skepticism remains about whether the public will embrace this narrative or view it as a rebranding of traditional Conservative values.
