One out of every five individuals has observed large-scale illegal dumping in their localities, according to recent distressing survey results. Concerns have been raised to government officials about the potential of the UK becoming an “environmental lawless zone” due to this trend, following public outrage over a massive pile of waste unlawfully disposed of in Oxfordshire last month.

The dumped debris extended approximately 150 meters, prompting calls for the establishment of a fly-tipping hotline and increased enforcement by the National Crime Agency (NCA). When asked if they had witnessed similar large-scale dumping, 20% of respondents confirmed they had.

Among those respondents, a majority (63%) reported that the issue had worsened over the past year. Tim Farron, the Liberal Democrats’ spokesperson for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs, commented, “These statistics reveal that the appalling waste heap in Oxfordshire is just the beginning of a much larger problem.”

From waterways to countryside roads, criminal gangs are transforming the nation into an environmental “wild west,” he added. The Environment Agency estimates that around 10,000 tonnes of waste were illegally dumped near Kidlington, with ongoing efforts to clear the site.

A significant portion of the public believes that organized criminal groups are responsible for the proliferation of illicit dumping grounds. The survey, conducted by Savanta, involved interviews with 2,297 adults in the UK.

A representative from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs emphasized, “Waste-related crimes severely impact local communities. Collaborative efforts are in place across various government agencies to eradicate illegal waste practices nationwide and hold offenders accountable.”

“We are actively supporting the Environment Agency in combating waste system exploitation by increasing enforcement resources and funding by 50%, as well as imposing stricter penalties on violators,” the spokesperson continued.

Additionally, a spokesperson from the Labour Party criticized the previous Conservative government for allowing waste gangs to operate freely, resulting in a 20% increase in recorded incidents during their last five years in power.

He stated, “Communities have been left to deal with the aftermath of the Tory administration’s inaction. Labour is taking strong measures against illegal waste practices, utilizing drones and mobile CCTV cameras to identify vehicles used by fly-tippers, and empowering councils to confiscate and destroy seized vehicles.”
