Anthony Joshua has resumed training at the boxing gym nearly three weeks after being involved in a fatal car accident in Nigeria. The former two-time heavyweight world champion was a passenger in a Lexus SUV that crashed into a stationary truck near Lagos, resulting in the tragic deaths of two of Joshua’s close friends and teammates, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele. Joshua, who sustained minor injuries, attended the funerals of the deceased in London on January 4.
During his visit to Nigeria for a holiday and to see family, Joshua had recently defeated YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul before the accident. Following a few days of hospital treatment, he was discharged on New Year’s Eve, prompting speculation about his boxing future.
Despite earlier reports suggesting Joshua’s retirement due to the crash, his uncle disclosed that Joshua had not made a final decision. The boxer was seen on Snapchat sharing images of his gym sessions, describing them as “mental strength therapy.” He engaged in various workouts, including hitting pads, lower leg exercises, stationary biking, and pool sessions.
While Joshua’s driver faced charges related to the accident, reports revealed that Joshua narrowly avoided a more severe fate by switching seats in the vehicle just before the crash. His promoter, Eddie Hearn, emphasized that no discussions about Joshua’s return to boxing were taking place, highlighting the need for Joshua to have time to recover physically, mentally, and emotionally before making any decisions about his future in the ring.
