The individual known as the ‘hero of Bondi Beach’ has reached out to people worldwide, requesting their prayers as he faces a health setback while in New York. He is currently in the US for medical treatment related to the gunshot wounds he sustained during an incident at Bondi Beach in December, where he disarmed one of the alleged shooters. His courageous act was captured on camera and went viral globally.
In an Instagram video shared recently, the visibly unwell Mr. al-Ahmed was seen resting in a hotel room surrounded by well-wishers. He mentioned that his health had worsened, leading to the cancellation of appointments due to sudden swelling and severe pain in his hand, for which he has undergone multiple surgical procedures.
Expressing his feelings, he stated, “When the pain resurfaces after medication wears off, I feel disheartened. But knowing that I acted to protect innocent lives and receiving love and well wishes from many, I find hope, positivity, and joy.”
The Sydney native is receiving specialized care in the US following the tragic December 14 attack at Bondi Beach, which resulted in the loss of 15 lives. One of the perpetrators, Naveed Akram, has been charged with multiple offenses, including 15 counts of murder. His father, Sajid Akram, who was involved in the attack, was fatally shot by the police.
Despite the canceled appointments, Mr. al-Ahmed expressed gratitude to those who visited him, showing kindness and concern for his well-being in his modest accommodation. He thanked them sincerely and asked for continued prayers.
Following his meeting with former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, Mr. al-Ahmed visited the United States Congress in New York, engaging with officials and expressing his gratitude for the support received. He has met various political figures post the Sydney incident, with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and NSW Premier Chris Minns visiting him in the hospital immediately after the attack.
Praising his bravery, Mr. Rudd commended him for his extraordinary actions that resonated globally. Both political leaders described Mr. al-Ahmed as a true hero and a symbol of courage.
