An acclaimed B&B and café has permanently shut down in a significant setback for the local community, with the owner attributing the closure to the challenging location that hindered foot traffic.
The Dove Inn, a gluten-free café and B&B located in Alburgh, Norfolk, ceased operations last Friday after a successful run of two and a half years catering to what the proprietor, Sonya Resemblance, referred to as “wonderful patrons.”
This closure adds to the ongoing struggles faced by pubs and hospitality establishments across Britain, where many have been forced to close due to escalating expenses and evolving consumer behaviors that have strained the industry.
In a recent example, the popular White Horse on London End in Beaconsfield shut down permanently earlier this month. Industry insiders had previously raised concerns about the future of pubs, highlighting the financial burdens caused by unprecedented cost increases, resulting in the closure of 300 pubs in the first quarter of 2025 alone.
Despite gaining recognition as one of the top 50 cafés in the UK at the 2025 Small Business Awards shortly before shutting down, the Dove Inn faced insurmountable challenges. Sonya Resemblance, who took over the inn in July 2023, offered a diverse menu including brunch, lunch, and sought-after Sunday roasts, while also prioritizing job creation, training initiatives, and mental health-focused events.
The establishment also clinched two prestigious Norfolk awards at Luxlife Magazine’s Food and Drink Awards, winning titles for Emerging Hospitality Business of the Year and B&B and Pub of the Year.
A highlight of the café was its entirely gluten-free menu, a feature that Sonya took great pride in, ensuring a safe dining experience for individuals with dietary restrictions.
In bidding farewell, Sonya expressed gratitude to the loyal customers, acknowledging the positive impact the business had in creating employment opportunities and fostering social connections crucial for mental well-being.
Despite efforts from devoted patrons to save the business, Sonya confirmed the regretful decision to close on Friday, January 16, prompting an outpouring of supportive messages from the community.
One customer conveyed their sorrow, saying, “Deeply saddened by this news. Thank you for providing a wonderful gathering place and serving incredible food. Hoping for your return in the future.”
