Nicky Henderson remains calm and confident ahead of the upcoming showdown between Constitution Hill and rising star The New Lion this Saturday. Constitution Hill, a former unbeaten champion in jumps racing, faced setbacks last season with falls at major races like the Champion Hurdle and Punchestown Champion Hurdle.
To ensure Constitution Hill’s peak performance, Henderson took proactive measures by sending the eight-year-old horse for a thorough check-up at an equine vision specialist. Despite recent challenges, Constitution Hill is positioned as the third favorite in the betting odds for the next year’s Champion Hurdle, trailing behind contenders like Lossiemouth and The New Lion.
The much-anticipated clash between Constitution Hill and The New Lion is set to take place at the BetMGM Fighting Fifth Hurdle in Newcastle. The field includes notable entries such as Anzadam from Willie Mullins and the reigning Champion Hurdle winner, Golden Ace. Coral’s betting odds indicate a close competition between Constitution Hill and The New Lion, both priced at 11-8.
Henderson expressed optimism about Constitution Hill’s readiness for the race, highlighting a successful training session with jockey Nico de Boinville. As preparations intensify, Henderson plans to accompany Constitution Hill on a final practice run to Newcastle before the event. Despite considering adding a pacemaker to the lineup, Henderson ultimately decided against it.
While Henderson will be present at Newbury for other races, owner Michael Buckley will attend the Newcastle event. The stage is set for an exciting showdown between the seasoned champion and the emerging talent, promising a thrilling spectacle for horse racing enthusiasts.
