Virgin Media O2 users are being warned to be cautious of a new email scam circulating in the UK. The fraudulent emails are attempting to exploit the recent closure of O2’s 3G mobile platform, which has been replaced by faster 4G and 5G services. While most customers are unaffected by the switch, scammers are targeting individuals with emails claiming a SIM card upgrade is necessary.

The deceptive emails, disguised with official branding, have a subject line that reads “Alert: Switch to Your New 5G SIM for a Faster, Stronger Network.” Virgin Media O2 emphasizes that these emails are not legitimate and should be deleted immediately without clicking on any links or responding. Recipients are advised to forward any suspicious emails to phishing@virginmediao2.co.uk.

This phishing scam aims to deceive individuals into sharing sensitive personal information by impersonating a reputable organization. In some cases, scammers may even send a SIM card via courier and request recipients to activate it with a PIN. The email also prompts users to log in to the O2 app with a provided password and includes a “Contact Us” button that could connect victims directly to the fraudsters.

If successful, scammers could gain unauthorized access to personal accounts, leading to potential identity theft and financial harm. To protect against such scams, individuals are advised to verify the authenticity of emails from service providers, refrain from engaging with suspicious requests, and contact the company directly using verified contact information.

It is crucial to remain vigilant and cautious when dealing with unsolicited emails, especially those requesting sensitive information or immediate action. If in doubt, seek guidance from trusted sources before taking any steps in response to such communications.
