The head of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) is urging the UK to strengthen its connections with Europe due to concerns about the reliability of Donald Trump as a partner. Nearly ten years after the EU referendum, Paul Nowak emphasized that both Leavers and Remainers are now focused on resolving issues stemming from the problematic Brexit deal. Nowak suggested that a UK-EU customs union could facilitate tariff-free trade by aligning standards for traded goods.
These statements follow a notable move by Wes Streeting, who diverged from Keir Starmer by expressing support for a customs union agreement with the EU. Nowak emphasized the importance of fostering a robust working relationship with Europe, especially in light of uncertainties arising from the Trump administration’s policies. He stressed the need for close economic ties with European partners, highlighting the significance for sectors like automotive, aerospace, and chemicals that rely on seamless trade with Europe.
The TUC leader dismissed lingering Brexit divisions, advocating for a pragmatic approach towards enhancing trade relationships. He emphasized the necessity of rectifying the flawed Brexit deal left by the Tories to secure the best possible outcome for working people. Nowak underscored that the focus should be on strengthening ties with the UK’s most important trading partner, emphasizing the economic, political, and national security benefits of closer collaboration with Europe, particularly in the context of Trump’s unpredictability.
