An elderly couple tragically lost their lives after plummeting from a cliff in Whitby, North Yorkshire. The couple has been identified as David Jeffcock, 80, and Susan Jeffcock, 74, who passed away on July 30 near the Whitby Abbey heritage site.
Eyewitnesses reported that the couple fell from the cliff’s edge, prompting a swift response from emergency services including police, ambulances, and rescue helicopters. A nearby camper described the chaotic scene as “all hell broke loose” with helicopters arriving promptly on the Wednesday evening.
According to reports, the couple was walking along a path when they suddenly jumped off the cliff, landing on the rocks below. Sadly, they did not survive the fall. Tragically, they were the first of four individuals to perish in cliff falls within a span of five days.
In a separate incident, a woman in her 60s was found deceased at the foot of the cliffs near the Pavilion on July 31. Subsequently, on August 2, the body of another woman, believed to be in her 50s, was discovered further down the coast at Sandsend. Investigations are ongoing to determine the identities of these two women.
An inquest into the deaths of Mr. and Mrs. Jeffcock is scheduled to take place on Monday, September 22 at the Northallerton Coroner’s Court.
