The father of the Swiss bar owner where 40 individuals lost their lives in a New Year fire has acknowledged that his son holds accountability for the tragic incident. Jean Moretti, speaking out on behalf of his son Jacques and daughter-in-law during their interrogation by prosecutors, expressed that while his son bears responsibility as the owner, the question of guilt is yet to be determined. Describing Jacques as a diligent worker profoundly impacted by the fire, Jean mentioned that their residence is now under police protection amidst increasing public outrage. Following questioning by prosecutors, Jacques Moretti was placed in pre-trial detention, while his wife Jessica was released after interrogation. Authorities believe the fire originated in the bar’s basement due to champagne bottles with party sparklers coming into close contact with sound insulation foam, potentially leading to a catastrophic “flashover.” The investigation will scrutinize the responsibilities of both the bar proprietors and the authorities, who admitted to the lack of fire safety inspections since 2019. The tragedy, which claimed 40 lives and injured 116 individuals, affected a wide range of nationalities, with 83 victims still receiving treatment in hospitals.
