The mystery surrounding the purple sky in Birmingham has been solved as aerial images captured a pink hue emanating from grow lights at Birmingham City Football Club. These LED lights are commonly used by groundstaff to promote grass growth on the pitch, dispelling speculations linking the phenomenon to snow.

Storm Goretti, the initial named storm of 2026 hitting the UK, has caused widespread chaos, with ongoing warnings for snow and ice affecting various parts of the country. Tens of thousands of households remain without power post-storm, particularly in the South West, West Midlands, and East Midlands. The situation prompted Downing Street to offer support to affected residences, with forecasters cautioning about heightened flood risks due to melting snow and rainfall.

In terms of snowfall data, measurements show significant accumulations in different regions, including Powys, Shropshire, Nottingham, Sutherland, and Kincardineshire. Moreover, Cornwall experienced the highest rainfall levels, followed by Dyfed and Devon.

As weather warnings persist, a yellow alert for snow and ice remains in effect, anticipating further snowfall in northern England and Scotland along with a risk of widespread ice disruptions. Separate warnings cover England, Wales, and Northern Ireland for varying periods, highlighting icy conditions and potential snow showers.

Looking ahead, another yellow warning for snow and ice is slated for several regions, including Scotland, Midlands, and northern England, extending into Sunday. The forecast indicates additional snowfall, especially at higher elevations. Met Office meteorologist Dan Stroud predicts continued cold and unsettled conditions over the weekend, with a mix of wintry showers and frosty spells. Rain transitioning to snow is expected in inland areas, while temperatures are forecasted to rise gradually throughout Sunday.
