Ricky Gervais, known for his wit, has announced that his upcoming stand-up show will be named ‘Legend,’ jokingly suggesting that people should refer to him as such in the future regardless of what happens. This decision follows the success of his previous show, ‘Mortality,’ which topped Netflix charts after its release on December 30, attracting a large global audience.
The renowned creator of ‘The Office,’ Gervais, aged 64, shared, “I’m already gearing up for the new show. In case this is my final tour, I’ve chosen the title ‘Legend.’ It’s like pre-empting my own obituary, being remembered as a legend – no, I said that! The theme will revolve around me, but of course, I’ll poke fun at myself. It’s a quirky way to portray oneself.”
During his last tour, ‘Mortality,’ spanning from 2024 to 2025, Gervais entertained audiences across 80 arena shows worldwide, including iconic venues like LA’s Hollywood Bowl, NYC’s Radio City Music Hall, and London’s Palladium. The tour was a massive success, breaking box office records for English comedy shows in various European countries. Gervais generously donated £2.5 million to charities from the additional profits generated by Platinum Ticket sales.
In a conversation with Romesh Ranganathan on his podcast, Gervais expressed his deep passion for stand-up comedy, highlighting its significance in his career evolution. He emphasized his transition from a writer and director to a stand-up comedian, stating, “Stand-up is my true calling now. It’s the core of my career. Initially, I focused on writing and directing to establish my credibility. But stand-up gradually took over, and with ‘Humanity,’ I realized that I’m primarily a stand-up who dabbles in other fields. I cherish the freedom of expression that stand-up offers worldwide.”
Nominated for the best stand-up category at the upcoming Golden Globes, Gervais hinted at his unlikelihood to attend the event. Despite hosting the Golden Globes five times, he confessed his aversion to watching himself on screen and expressed a preference for tranquility over the glitz and glamour of award ceremonies.
Apart from his acclaimed work on ‘The Office,’ Gervais has garnered success with hit shows like ‘After Life,’ ‘Extras,’ and ‘Derek.’ In recent years, he has dedicated more time to honing his stand-up comedy skills, showcasing his comedic prowess to audiences worldwide.
