Google has issued a crucial alert for MacBook users who utilize the Chrome browser. The tech giant announced the discontinuation of Chrome support for older versions of Apple’s macOS on MacBook devices. While Chrome will still function on MacBooks and iMacs, it will no longer receive updates or security patches, potentially leaving users vulnerable to cyber threats.
The changes will impact Macs running macOS 12 (Monterey) or earlier, as Google will cease providing Chrome updates for these operating systems. Users on these platforms will need to upgrade to a newer system like macOS Ventura to ensure continued browser support. However, some older Mac models, including iMacs predating the 2017 version and MacBook Air models purchased before 2018, may not be compatible with Ventura, necessitating the purchase of a new device for safe Chrome usage.
The update is scheduled to take effect starting July this year. Google specified that Chrome version 150 is the final release supporting macOS 12 (Monterey), with Chrome version 151, expected to launch on July 28, 2026, requiring macOS 13 Ventura or later. Users must ensure their devices are running macOS 13 or newer to receive future Chrome updates.
While older Chrome versions will continue to function on outdated operating systems, users won’t receive further updates. Google advises users currently on macOS 12 (Monterey) to transition to a supported macOS version, such as macOS 13 Ventura or later, to receive the latest security updates and Chrome features.
