A finalist from the popular TV show Strictly Come Dancing was hurried to the hospital following a car crash that had the potential to be deadly. John Whaite, a winner of the Great British Bake Off who made it to the finals of the dance competition in 2021, shared on Instagram the fortunate circumstance that prevented the accident from being more severe.

In an update on Wednesday, John disclosed that he was struck by a car the previous night. Describing the incident, he wrote, “Last night I got run over (seriously). I rolled up the bonnet damaging it and the windscreen, before splatting onto the road and crawling to the pavement where some angel of a human threw his coat around me and waited with me for an ambulance.”

John further mentioned that medical professionals informed him the accident “could have been fatal” had he not been as muscular. “The doctors said ‘thank god you’re 16 stone of muscle because it could have been fatal’,” he recounted.

Emphasizing the importance of physical strength, John advised, “Moral of the story – build strong muscle and core strength, and don’t wear black while crossing the road in the dark when an idiot comes speeding without looking…”

The baker reassured his fans that he was doing well, stating, “I’ve been scanned and poked and prodded and I’m ok. Still gay though.” He later clarified his use of the term “speeding,” explaining that it was meant figuratively rather than literally.

John, who made history as part of Strictly Come Dancing’s first male same-sex couple on the 19th season, achieved second place on the show with his partner Johannes Radebe, ultimately losing to Rose Ayling-Ellis and Giovanni Pernice.

His appearance on Strictly occurred nearly a decade after his rise to fame on the Great British Bake Off in 2012, where he overcame a significant finger injury to emerge as the champion.

Apart from his television endeavors, John remains active in baking and resides in Leeds with his spouse Paul Atkins. The couple, engaged since 2017, finally tied the knot in a New York ceremony after seven years.

Reflecting on his relationship with his husband, John expressed, “The thing that I’m most proud of in my life, without a shadow of a doubt, is the fact that my husband and I have been through 18 years of togetherness.”
