The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and HMRC are planning a significant alteration to ten means-tested benefits soon. This change will lead to a shift in payment dates for thousands of welfare recipients, including those on Universal Credit. Payments scheduled for a bank holiday or weekend will be issued on the prior working day. As a result, payments due on August 23 or 24 will now be made on August 22. The adjustment comes amidst concerns about potential payment issues for state pensioners. The affected benefits will be paid out early in August, with the payment amount remaining constant unless there are changes in the recipient’s circumstances. Recipients are advised to manage their funds carefully as they will have to budget for the extended period until the next payment date. In case of any payment discrepancies, individuals should promptly contact the DWP to address the matter.
Separately, parents are being alerted to promptly update their Child Benefit information to avoid any disruptions. The HMRC is sending letters to parents of teenagers requesting details about their educational plans. Child Benefit amounts to £26.05 per week for the eldest or only child, with an additional £17.25 per week for each subsequent child. Payments automatically cease after a child’s 16th birthday, unless the education status is renewed. Parents whose children are still in education must notify HMRC by August 31 to continue receiving the benefit. The Child Benefit can be retained until the child reaches 19 years old and is enrolled in an approved apprenticeship or education program. Additionally, the benefit can be maintained for children undertaking specific training courses.
