BBC Radio 4 luminary Melvyn Bragg has decided to step away from his role as host of In Our Time after presiding over more than 1,000 episodes of the show. With a tenure spanning 26 years, Bragg will bid farewell to the program this week while continuing his work with BBC Radio 4.

In reflecting on his time with the show, Bragg remarked, “Despite its misleading title and humble beginnings with a six-month contract, it has been an incredible journey. I have collaborated with numerous talented individuals within the BBC and some of the most distinguished academics worldwide. It has been a tremendous honor and joy, and I eagerly anticipate further collaborations with BBC Radio 4. Thank you for tuning in.”

Since its inception in 1998, Bragg has been at the helm of In Our Time. The program delves into a diverse array of historical, scientific, and philosophical subjects, establishing itself as one of Radio 4’s most successful discussion platforms.

BBC Director General Tim Davie commended Bragg’s departure, stating, “Melvyn’s dedication to the arts, intellectual curiosity, and enduring commitment to public service broadcasting for over six decades have enriched the lives of millions. Through In Our Time on Radio 4, he has consistently delivered depth, insight, and humanity to our airwaves for more than 25 years, setting a gold standard in broadcasting and interview excellence that will inspire future generations.”

Mohit Bakaya, Director of Speech and Controller of BBC Radio 4, added, “Over the past thirty years, Melvyn has been an integral part of Radio 4. His sharp intellect, boundless curiosity, and remarkable thirst for knowledge distinguish him as a broadcasting luminary. While his presence on In Our Time will be missed, his legacy lives on through the extensive archive of over 1,000 episodes, serving as a valuable resource for all knowledge enthusiasts. I eagerly anticipate collaborating with him on upcoming projects for Radio 4.”

Beginning his BBC journey as a general trainee in 1961, Bragg later transitioned to the World Service. Noteworthy contributions include a decade-long stint hosting Radio 4’s Start the Week from 1988 to 1998. Bragg’s accolades include being an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society and The British Academy, receiving a Peerage in 1998, and being named a Companion of Honour in 2017.
