Multiple websites and applications are currently offline due to a widespread Amazon Web Services (AWS) outage impacting digital platforms. AWS, a key infrastructure provider, is facing technical difficulties leading to service disruptions across various online platforms.
Notable services affected include Snapchat, Slack, Ring, Signal, Virgin Media, BT, EE, Sky, and major UK banks such as Lloyds, Halifax, and Bank of Scotland. The HMRC website is also experiencing downtime.
AWS has acknowledged the issue’s root cause and reports that most services are gradually recovering. They stated, “We are seeing improvements across the majority of impacted AWS Services. Global services dependent on US-EAST-1 are also back online. Our teams are actively working towards full restoration and will provide further updates as progress unfolds.”
Furthermore, a surge in error reports was observed on Monday morning, with Downdetector logging over 2,681 incidents related to AWS.
Regarding the disruptions, an HMRC spokesperson mentioned, “We are aware of connectivity challenges to our online services due to the global AWS problem. We are collaborating urgently with AWS to resolve this issue.” They advised customers facing delays to consider contacting them later when the situation stabilizes.
Similarly, a representative from Lloyds Bank acknowledged the impact of the AWS issues on their services, apologizing for any inconvenience caused and urging patience as they strive to restore all services swiftly.
