The Rising Sun pub in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, has decided to discontinue its popular Abba, Meat Loaf, and Tina Turner tribute nights due to receiving a “noise nuisance” notice from the local council. The outdoor music events, which have been a hit for years, were halted after a complaint was lodged with the council this summer by an individual described as holding a grudge against the establishment.

Owner Terry Kenny, expressing disappointment over the situation, mentioned that the majority of locals eagerly anticipated these summer events, emphasizing the friendly atmosphere and absence of rock bands. The sudden cancellation has left regular patrons dismayed, prompting a petition to overturn Wakefield Council’s ruling.

Kenny, who has operated the pub for 23 years, raised concerns about the financial impact as the outdoor performances contributed significantly to the pub’s earnings, supporting charitable causes like the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. The pub’s future now appears uncertain, with a significant portion of its yearly revenue at risk, potentially leading to closure.

Wakefield Council, which observed activities at the pub near Castleford, issued a Noise Abatement Notice in June citing consistent evidence of noise disturbance. While the council asserts its commitment to facilitating responsible entertainment for local businesses, it also prioritizes the community’s residential tranquility.

In response to the situation, patrons and supporters have expressed frustration on social media, condemning the complaint and showing solidarity with the pub’s plight. Despite the setback, the Rising Sun pub’s supporters have initiated a petition to advocate for the reinstatement of their beloved outdoor shows.
