If you are considering giving your refrigerator a thorough cleaning, here is a cost-effective expert tip to ensure a long-lasting fresh scent.

Despite being one of the most frequently used household appliances, a mere one in five individuals confess to cleaning their fridge freezer only twice a year, as per a 2024 study. Apart from the buildup of dirt, neglecting to clean your fridge can lead to potential foodborne illnesses and cross-contamination.

Senior product manager for refrigeration at Hotpoint, Jamie Cooper, emphasized the importance of regular deep cleaning for optimal functionality and food safety of your fridge freezer. This not only enhances hygiene but also prolongs the lifespan of the appliance and aids in energy efficiency.

Fortunately, there exists a remarkably affordable and straightforward method to maintain a fresh-smelling fridge, utilizing a common kitchen item.

Prior to cleaning your fridge, it is essential to empty it out completely. Jamie recommends defrosting the freezer if ice has accumulated by turning it off, unplugging it safely, and allowing the ice to melt, absorbing excess water with towels.

He cautions against using boiling water for speeding up the process, as it could harm the appliance. This is also an opportune time to inspect for any maintenance issues and check the expiration of food items.

After removing all detachable components such as shelves, drawers, and racks, it’s time to put the simple hack into action – using baking soda.

According to Jamie, these parts can be cleaned with a mixture of warm water and a tablespoon of baking soda. This natural cleaner effectively eliminates grime without causing damage and is safe for use in food storage areas.

He further adds that baking soda is an economical and versatile cleaning agent to have at home, ideal for maintaining the fridge freezer. Additionally, it can absorb odors in between deep cleans.

Jamie suggests placing an open container of baking soda in the fridge to eliminate odors for up to a month. For a pleasant aroma, a cotton ball with a few drops of vanilla extract can be used.

If you do not have baking soda readily available, you can purchase 200g for just 65p at Asda.
