Jack Draper’s mixed doubles partner Jessica Pegula issued an apology to the British player following an error during the US Open semi-finals that dashed their chances of winning the $1 million prize at Flushing Meadows.

Draper and Pegula showcased strong performances at the Grand Slam event, defeating top-tier opponents like Carlos Alcaraz and Emma Raducanu in straight sets. They continued their success with a commanding 4-1, 4-1 victory over Daniil Medvedev and Mirra Andreeva.

Facing off against Iga Swiatek, the second-ranked player in the world, and Casper Ruud, the duo started well by winning the first set 5-3. However, their opponents fought back in the second set, forcing a tiebreak where Draper and Pegula initially held a lead but ultimately lost six consecutive points, leading to their elimination from the tournament.

During a crucial moment in the match, Pegula’s decision to volley a shot from Swiatek allowed the opposing team to secure the win, despite Draper being in a good position to return the ball. Pegula expressed regret after the match, acknowledging her mistake and feeling disappointed for potentially letting Draper down.

In a post-match interview, Pegula expressed her sadness over the outcome, emphasizing her desire to continue playing and praising her partnership with Draper. Draper, on the other hand, commended Pegula for her performance in the first set, dismissing any notion of her being at fault and highlighting their teamwork and camaraderie on the court.

The incident followed a previous exchange where Pegula reprimanded Draper for referring to mixed doubles as an “exhibition format,” which she later apologized for during a press conference.
