Young darting sensation Mitchell Lawrie, born in 2010, has impressed Luke Littler with his exceptional performance at the WDF World Championship held at Lakeside. Lawrie made history by becoming the youngest player to win at Lakeside, defeating Tomoya Maruyama and Jason Brandon with remarkable skill, including hitting five maximums and achieving impressive checkouts. His outstanding 97.21 average at the tournament is the highest recorded so far.
Expressing his amazement on the WDF Darts Instagram account, Littler praised Lawrie, referring to him as “a joke.” Lawrie, filled with pride after his victory over Brandon, stated, “I’m absolutely buzzing with myself.” Despite facing a tough opponent in Brandon, Lawrie started strong, maintaining high performance levels throughout the match.
Lawrie’s quick start in the first set, finishing legs in less than 15 darts, drew support from the crowd. Although he narrowly missed a potential nine-dart finish, Lawrie impressed with a superb 134 checkout. As the match progressed, Lawrie faced a resurgence from Brandon but managed to refocus and secure the win.
Reflecting on his performance and the crowd’s support, Lawrie acknowledged a momentary lapse in concentration but regained his focus to clinch victory. Despite some nerves towards the end, Lawrie remained composed and attributed a missed opportunity to external distractions from the crowd.
Looking ahead, the PDC World Darts Championship is set to begin on December 11, with exclusive live coverage available through Sky’s Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle.
